Los Angeles native Beth Hart who is a blues-inspired rocker and former street performer, made her debut in 1995 on Immortal and gained attention for her unpretentious, open-minded nature and her innate musicianship, emotional live performances as well as a voice that was compared to those of Janis Joplin. "Hart is the perfect example of a natural woman," wrote Chuck Taylor for the October 2, 1999, issue of Billboard magazine "bawdy and funny, chatty and free-spirited with her choice of spicy language. But, nothing compares to her presence on stage. The tall, lean singer/songwriter moves and screams out songs along in a band with Mick Jagger . At other times, she'll take her place on stage, either at the piano or the center with her legs crossed over the chairs, and her voice is delicate and painfulthat it's difficult to tell if she's going to cry or whether you'll. Hart was a teen who took part in amateur contests and experienced similar reactions. But she did have reservations about the industry at the time she began her professional career. Hart was forced to leave her band when travelling around the world proved to be detrimental. Hart was forced to stay out of the public eye for nearly four years. Hart spent this time looking into her soul, writing music and dealing with personal problems. In the end, eager to give her professional career a chance to shine she resurfaced in 1999 with the highly acclaimed Screamin' for My Supper the album that was a culmination of Hart's songwriting abilities through honest, vulnerable tunes about facing life's issues.
